The Choreographic Performance Workshops or CPWs are showings of short works-in-progress by professional dance artists. Join us on the last Saturday of (almost) every month from September to April to discover Canadian dance in the making. The houses are consistently good with a range of works from newcomers to those who tour internationally, creating a guaranteed worthwhile experience.

Take Two Program and Hub 14 Residencies

Take Two is an extension of the regular CPW series which we initiated in 2010/11 and are continuing this year.

Choreographers wishing to show their work at a regular CPW have an opportunity to show a further iteration of their work as part of our Take Two platform, at the November or February CPWs. Our goal is to:

This year we are thrilled to initiate a new partnership with Hub 14, with two residencies for selected Take Two artist, who will be provided with a maximum of 15 hours of studio each, to further research their artistic processes.

While the Take Two program is a first come first serve platform, the two residencies will be curated. Please note that the deadlines to apply for the Take Two residencies are respectively September 27th for the November Take Two, and December 20th for the February Take Two.

Partnership with Chimera Project's Fresh Blood

We are also pleased to announce our partnership with The Chimera Project for their FRESH BLOOD festival. One outstanding choreographer, selected by Series 8:08 from the Choreographic Performance Workshops, will be presented in FRESH BLOOD 2012 on March 16th and 17th.


Call to Artists: Dance Films

As a free addition to our program we are hosting dance films screenings before our CPWs. The films will be shown on a TV in the lobby at the Pia Bouman School from 7.40pm on, every other month, starting in September:

If you are interested in showing a dance film that is under 20 minutes in length, you can contact us. All film screenings will be advertised alongside our regular CPW news. This includes flyers, email newsletters, facebook and this website. Please ensure that you have the right to submit and show your film.

Resident Outside Eyes

Our Resident Outside Eyes for the season 2011/12 are Sylvie Bouchard, Susie Burpee, Susan Cash, Marie-Josée Chartier, Christopher House, Heidi Strauss and Lee Su-Feh.

Sylvie Bouchard

Sylvie Bouchard is originally from Montréal and began her training there before moving to Toronto in 1983, to study at the School of the Toronto Dance Theatre. She subsequently joined the company in 1985 and performed nationally and internationally with them for 5 years. Sylvie has also performed with Kaeja d'Dance, Winnipeg Contemporary Dancers and Dancemakers as well as many other independent choreographers. She was nominated for a Dora Mavor Moore award for best performance for her solo Cassiopeia, which premiered at the DuMaurier Theatre in 1999. In 1997, Sylvie Bouchard formed the company CORPUS with artistic partner David Danzon. Until 2008, she co-created and performed in 8 works through CORPUS, touring internationally. She also co-choreographed and starred in the popular children TV Series Four-Square on Treehouse TV. In 1993, Bouchard created Dusk Dances, a festival that presents dance in public parks. Dusk Dances grew under the artistic direction of both Bouchard and Danzon and through the Company CORPUS until she was appointed sole festival director in 2008. Ms. Bouchard is also the recipient of the 2009 KM hunter award for dance, and is artistic director of BoucharDanse, a Company that serves as an umbrella for Ms. Bouchard's artistic endeavors.

Susie Burpee

Contemporary dance artist Susie Burpee is based in Toronto, where she works as a performer, choreographer, and teacher. She trained at the Professional Program of Contemporary Dancers and augmented her studies at the Limón and Cunningham Schools in New York, and L'École Philippe Gaulier in Paris. A powerful and provocative interpreter, Susie was a company dancer with the critically acclaimed Dancemakers, Le Groupe Dance Lab, and Ruth Cansfield Dance. As an independent artist, she performs in her own work, and continues to work closely with innovative choreographers Serge Bennathan, Lesandra Dodson, and Tedd Robinson. As a creator, Susie creates works that showcase 'fully human characters, struggling for connection' (The Toronto Star). She has been awarded Dora Mavor Moore Awards for Outstanding Performance and Choreography, and in 2006 she received the K.M. Hunter Artists Award for Dance. Susie teaches technique classes and workshops for professional dancers and students across Canada, notably, Tedd Robinson's La B.A.R.N. Summer XIntensive, Canadian Children's Dance Theatre, and Dancemakers.

Susan Cash

Susan Cash is a contemporary dance artist from Toronto Canada. Her choreographic work spans many different dance genres from theatrical works to site-specific creations, from music videos to dance films. Her choreographic work examines how movement can change the perspective of space. In addition to teaching, Susan acts as Dance Dramaturg for Series 8:08 and for many professional choreographers as a choreographic/creative consultant and facilitator.

Marie-Josée Chartier

A multi-faceted artist and award winning creator and performer, Marie-Josée Chartier moves easily between the worlds of dance, music, opera and multi-media in the roles of choreographer, performer, director, vocalist or teacher. In 2003, she founded Chartier Danse to support her creative endeavors and to engage in large-scale collaborations. Over a distinguished career, she has created over thirty-five works that have been presented in dance series and festivals in Canada, Europe and Latin America. She has received Dora Mavor Moore Awards in Choreography, Performance and Production as well as the K.M. Hunter Award for Dance. In the last few years, she has been in demand as an artistic advisor and mentor to emerging and established artists in the world of dance and multi-media. She values the opportunity to share with her fellow artists the processes of creation and production.

Christopher House

Christopher House was born and raised in St. John's, Newfoundland. Resident Choreographer or Toronto Dance Theatre since 1981 and Artistic Director since and 1994, he has contributed over sixty works to the company's repertoire. He has also created choreographies for Lisbon's Ballet Gulbenkian, the National Ballet of Canada and Les grands Ballets Canadiens, among others; created several short videos, and directed two collaborations with The Hidden Cameras. His work has been presented across Canada and in such cities as New York, Mexico City, London, Berlin, Tokyo, Beijing and Mumbai. He has received many honours including three Dora Mavor Moore Awards, the Muriel Sherrin Award for International Achievement in Dance and an honorary doctorate from Memorial University of Newfoundland. Christopher House has appeared in his own works and in those of Sarah Chase, Peter Chin, David Earle, James Kudelka, Mark Morris and Peter Randazzo. He has enjoyed a close working relationship with Deborah Hay since 2006, and will perform his solo adaptation of Hay's At Once in the UK this year. He teaches Contemporary technique and Creative Process at the School of TDT and has taught at such institutions as the Juilliard School, Rotterdam Dansacademie and Jacob's Pillow. He is an Associate Dance Artist of Canada's National Arts Centre.

Heidi Strauss

Based in Toronto, Heidi Strauss is an independent dancer and choreographer. Since 1994 she has worked as a performer and collaborator with choreographers and directors for stage, film and opera. She has toured with Sylvain Émard Danse, Fujiwara Dance Inventions and Tribal Crackling Wind. In 2007 Strauss founded adelheid, a company to support her choreographic work. Her solos have been presented in Europe and Canada. AtLast (2005) and adelheid solos (2008) received 3 Dora Award nominations. Over the last 3 seasons she has been dance artist in residence at the Factory Theatre. Her trio work as it is was named one of the top 10 dance shows of 2009 by NOW magazine, in 2010 this time was awarded Dora Mavor Moore Awards for outstanding choreography and performance. She has created numerous works for companies, and professional training programs and given workshops across Canada and in the Czech Republic, Germany, Italy and Singapore. In other capacities, Strauss has worked as a movement coach (Necessary Angel Theatre Company, Volcano Theatre), choreographer for opera (the Frankfurt Opera and the Canadian Opera Company) and rehearsal director (Peter Chin, Chartier Danse and OVertigo). She is a co-director of Hub14.

Lee Su-Feh

Lee Su-Feh is a choreographer, dancer and dramaturge. Born and raised in Malaysia, her formation has been influenced by a range of practices, from traditional South-East Asian performance forms to more contemporary and experimental techniques and ideas. Currently based in Vancouver, she is Artistic Director of battery opera, whose award-winning work interrogates the contemporary body as a site of intersecting and displaced histories and practices. Lee Su-Feh is a choreographer, dancer and dramaturge. Born and raised in Malaysia, she started performing in the National Children's Theatre (1980-82) where she was introduced to a range of practices, from traditional South-East Asian performance forms to more contemporary and experimental techniques and ideas. In 1985 she moved to Paris to study contemporary dance. Since 1987 she has trained extensively in Chinese martial arts with an emphasis on the internal systems and presently studies Baguazhang. >Currently based in Vancouver, she is Artistic Director of battery opera, whose award-winning work interrogates the contemporary body as a site of intersecting and displaced histories and practices.
